Consumer Reports’ analysis compared cumulative maintenance costs across various brands for the first five years and then years six through ten of ownership. Interestingly, Tesla emerged as the brand with the absolute lowest maintenance costs across the entire automotive industry.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, several European luxury brands consistently ranked as the most expensive to maintain. This group includes Audi, BMW, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Volvo. Even within this premium segment, there’s considerable variation. Audi and BMW, while still costly, typically incur thousands of dollars less in maintenance over a decade compared to Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Land Rover. In a surprising contrast, domestic luxury brands Lincoln and Buick outperformed many mainstream and luxury competitors, positioning themselves just behind Tesla with remarkably low maintenance costs.
Elek further advises, “If you are considering a luxury model, opting for a domestic brand might be a wise choice to potentially lower your maintenance and repair expenses. For instance, over a 10-year period, maintaining and repairing Mercedes-Benz models can cost more than double compared to Lincoln vehicles.”
