How to Repair Road Rash on Your Car: A Simple DIY Guide

Road rash, those unsightly paint chips on your car’s leading edges, especially from highway driving or track days, can detract from your vehicle’s appearance. These are typically caused by gravel, stones, and road debris impacting your car’s paint. Fortunately, you don’t need to live with this damage. With a little patience and the right tools, such as the TouchUp RX automotive paint chip repair kit, you can effectively address road rash at home. This kit is designed to provide you with all the necessary components for an easy and effective repair process, helping you restore your car’s smooth, factory-fresh look.

Step 1: Applying the Automotive Paint

  1. Begin by applying a small amount of TouchUp RX automotive paint directly to the road rash affected panel or onto the beveled edge of the included squeegee.
  2. Utilize the squeegee to spread the paint across the paint chips. Hold the squeegee at approximately a 45-degree angle to the surface. The TouchUp RX kit thoughtfully includes two squeegee sizes: a larger squeegee, ideal for handling broad, unobstructed areas like your car’s hood, and a smaller, more precise squeegee designed to navigate tighter, more intricate spots such as around headlights or along the front edge of the hood, just above the bumper.
  3. Repeat the paint application process as necessary to ensure that all road rash chips are adequately filled with paint. This strategic application technique is designed to minimize the amount of excess paint left on the surface, which in turn significantly reduces the effort required during the subsequent excess removal step.

Step 2: Removing the Excess Paint

  1. Apply The Pink Stuff™ blending solution, provided in the kit, to the white blending cloth, also included.
  2. Fold the blending cloth twice to achieve a quarter of its original size, and apply a moderate amount of The Pink Stuff™ blending solution. Ensure the cloth is damp but not overly saturated.
  3. Using light pressure, gently rub the treated cloth over the entire area where excess paint is present. You will observe the excess paint beginning to gradually blend away, effectively leaving the fresh paint precisely within the paint chips where it is intended to remain.
  4. Continue this process until all unwanted excess paint is completely removed, revealing a clean, chip-free surface. If you inadvertently remove some paint from within the chips, simply repeat the paint application process, this time using even lighter pressure, after allowing approximately one hour for the initial paint application to set slightly.
