Starting your journey in State of Decay 2, you’ll quickly realize the importance of four wheels. Abandoned and broken down, your initial vehicle forces you to explore on foot. Your first crucial step is to locate a working vehicle out in the open world. While stumbling upon one is possible, there’s a much more efficient method to secure your first ride.

Finding Your First Vehicle

To quickly locate a vehicle, seek out lookout towers marked by binoculars on your map. These vantage points are key to surveying your surroundings. Climb to the top of the lookout tower to reach the survey point.

Aim and scan the question mark icons that appear on your map. Among these points of interest, you’re almost guaranteed to discover a vehicle. This method is the fastest way to acquire the transportation you desperately need to thrive in State of Decay 2.

Refueling Your Vehicle to Keep Moving

Once you’re cruising around in your newly found vehicle, keep an eye on the fuel gauge in the top left corner of your screen. Running out of gas will leave you stranded and vulnerable to zombie attacks. Fortunately, refueling is straightforward once you know what to do.

To refuel, you’ll need to find Gas Cans. These essential items are commonly found in locations like garages, sheds, and residential houses. With a Gas Can in your inventory, approach the rear left side of your vehicle. Hold the designated interaction button (E on PC, Y on Xbox) to begin refueling. This process takes a short time, and each Gas Can will typically replenish about half of your vehicle’s fuel tank.

Repairing Your Damaged Vehicle

Driving through hordes of zombies or crashing into obstacles will inevitably damage your vehicle. Smoke billowing from your car is a clear sign that it needs repairs. To get your vehicle back in top shape, you’ll need a Toolkit.

Toolkits, like Gas Cans, are often found in garages, sheds, and houses. Keep an eye out for these crucial repair items during your scavenging runs. Once you have a Toolkit, head to the front of your damaged vehicle. Interact with the front of the car by holding the designated button (E on PC, Y on Xbox). The repair process will commence, taking a few moments to complete. Afterward, your vehicle will be fully repaired and ready to withstand more apocalyptic adventures.

Maintaining your vehicle in State of Decay 2, by knowing how to repair car in State of Decay 2 and refuel it, is a core survival skill.
