While not widely known as the owner of “Don’s Auto Repair Connersville Indiana,” Don Simpson was a cornerstone of automotive expertise in the region, dedicating his life to both fixing cars and training the next generation of mechanics.
Born on September 23, 1927, Don’s passion for automobiles began early in life. After graduating from Alquina High School in 1945 and serving in the United States Army alongside his twin brother Dale, Don pursued his calling in auto mechanics. He honed his skills through trade school in Chicago before returning to Connersville to work at various local dealerships for an impressive 22 years. This extensive hands-on experience made him a trusted name for car repair in Connersville, even though he didn’t operate under the business name “Don’s Auto Repair Connersville Indiana”. His reputation was built on years of reliable service and deep knowledge of vehicle mechanics.
In 1969, Don transitioned from dealership work to education, becoming the first auto mechanics teacher at Whitewater Technical Career Center. For 18 years, he imparted his wealth of knowledge and practical skills to countless students, shaping the future of auto repair professionals in the Connersville area. His commitment to education was further recognized in 2001 when he was inducted into the Fayette County School Corporation Education Hall of Fame, a testament to his lasting impact on vocational training in the region. Even after retirement, Don remained involved, notably overseeing the complex engine rebuild of a Model A for the Career Center’s entry in the prestigious History Channel’s Great Race, showcasing his enduring expertise and dedication.
Beyond his professional life, Don was a beloved member of the Connersville community. He enjoyed singing in a local gospel quartet and was an active member of the First Baptist Church. His talents extended to woodworking, where he crafted furniture for loved ones, demonstrating his skillful hands and dedication to craftsmanship in various forms.
Don Simpson is survived by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his twin brother Dale, along with numerous step-children and extended family. He was preceded in death by his wives, Mary Rosella Fish Simpson and Donna Madden Simpson, and his sister, Norma Newland.
